Royal Crown Derby Cricket 1947-1958
Phillip Robinson had a keen interest in cricket and in the aftermath of the War a works team was formed and performed, with varying success, in the local leagues. Such was the enthusiasm that a cricket ground was acquired off Ferrers Way in Allestree. It was near to the area now occupied by the houses in Foxlands Avenue.
Phillip Robinson being passed the cricket bat by Fred Finney with Harold Robinson and Colin Osborn by the pavilion.
Above is a series of photographs taken at the ground on July 3rd 1953 on the occasion of Ann Robinson's first birthday. She is being presented with a cake by Fred Finney. Lawrence "Lol" Taylor, office clerk, is left holding the baby! Charlie Warrilow was appointed groundsman and maintained the ground to such a high standard it soon became a popular venue in the local leagues.
Below is a fixtures list for the period 1947-1950, compiled from information in the Derby Evening Telegraph. During the season the team played at least once and sometimes twice a week on a 10 overs-a-side basis. The other team names include some well known local businesses including Leys, Hunters, Cromford Colour Co Ltd, etc. If you think that your family member might have played for the works team you can search for the name using the Ctrl F function.

In 1953, one year after the Board of Trade restrictions ended, this would have been a most welcome prize, and it has clearly been well looked after since it was presented to Mr Jackson. As the manufacturer of such prizes, it could be argued that this put the Royal Crown Derby Team at an advantage, although I am not sure that this is supported by the actual team achievements!
I have gathered the information given below from the Allestree Cricket Club website which is an excellent resource, particularly in respect of Royal Crown Derby, as full details of the opposition team members were recorded. The games were very much a social occasion with the excellent teas provided by the hosting team sometimes being rather more memorable than the quality of the cricket.
